History
Welcome to Portugal, the Algarve and Clube Naútico de Tavira. Welcome to this land of friendly people, of sailing, of sun and the sea.
We invite you to this land of sea adventurers, explorers and famous ocean navigators. With our small population of only 10 million people we have 4 million more in foreign lands, and we now look to these as our modern day pioneers and financial adventures.
Tavira is the ancient capital of the Algarve and was first established as a trading port by the Romans, it now supports a different economy based on the sun seeking demands of North Europeans requiring the perfect holiday destination.
The river Gilão which through Tavira is lined with the boats of our fishing fleet who provide for our daily need for fresh fish.
The ancient bridge which spans the river is world famous and all visitors marvel at its
timeless beauty and simple construction, with every visitor including a photograph in their holiday memories.
Although an old city, Tavira is served with modern communication systems, a Railway and modern roads link us to Faro International Airport 30Km to the West. By the European auto route Seville is 220Km to the East, and Lisbon 300Km Northwards.
We can accommodate you, with our facilities able to take boat trailers, lorries and shipping containers of any size without problems.
Team accommodation can be provided in our 3 new hotels or in any of the smaller pensions scattered throughout Tavira. We will also provide facilities at our Club for teams wishing to use tent or caravan accommodation. Throughout are 100s of places to eat, as you would expect from a nation who's n.º 1 hobby is eating.
Food is clean, cheap, and fresh with a multitude of meats, fish, vegetables and salads. A
large range of take-away food is available including vegetarian and pasta, but above all rules our mouth watering grilled piri-piri chicken. Much enjoyed by visiting sailors is fresh pressed juice from our super sweet Tavira oranges. For anyone wishing to make their own food a full range of mini-markets and supermarkets are available.
Historically our Club was established to teach sailing and sea skills to the young people of the area, and although still 1st and foremost a sailing school, we have developed into a regional centre for marine educational permanent staff in teaching maintenance and secretarial roles all led by our Secretary Genenral Pedro Rodrigues.
A befits our maritime ancestry we provide a welcome, safe anchorage, and hospitality to all visiting sailors, from coastal cruisers to transatlantic voyagers.
The weather on the Eastern Algarve coast is greatly influenced by Africa, it is warm, dry and low humidity, July and August bring blue cloudless skies, unbroken days of warm 30º sunshine with seawater temperatures above 22º.
All our beaches hold the EU flag award for the highest water quality.
Windy in July and August are offshore in early morning, turning to 220º by mid-day, with a speed of 15 knots plus until dark.
As you will appreciate these balanced sailing conditions offer no special advantages to any team, thus ensuring that ability, skill and consistency will be the essentials for success.
We, the directors and management of Club Náutico de Tavira Portugal, are pleased to offer our Club, our facilities, and beautiful weather, to the young sailors of Splash and Flash for the 2008 Championship.
